Forest Hills, which was first named in 1906 by Cord Meyer Company officials, had its first assemblage of living residences, in that same year, on Roman Avenue (now 72nd Avenue) between Austin Street and Queens Boulevard.
The Central Queens Historical Association honored the unique Forest Hills community on its 100th Anniversary by re-dedicating a 1991 plaque denoting the importance of these bow front, brownstone structures at 108-11, 15, 17, and 19, 72nd Avenue. The event took place in front of 108-19 72nd Avenue.
Civic, legislative and Forest Hills Chamber of Commerce leaders were on hand for the ceremonies.
The attached, two family buildings, now mostly commercial in use, were designed by Benjamin Dresler of 13 Willoughby Street, Brooklyn and built by the Cord Meyer Company for $5,000.00 in the summer and fall of 1906. Among early inhabitants of these buildings were the “Village” carpenter, plumber and electrician.
Forest Hills is considered a prime commercial and residential neighborhood with houses in Forest Hills Gardens selling for $2 million and up.
