Bayside freshman wins individual golf title

Three Queens girls came out on top during the PSAL's individual golf championship held last week at North Shore Towers in Floral Park.
Nine high school girls participated in the tournament, representing Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island. The students played a nine-hole tournament at the North Shore Towers Country Club last week with first, second and third place all going to a pair of Bayside freshmen and a Cardozo senior.
First place honors went to Alice Choi, a freshman at Bayside High School who shot a two-over-par round of 37 with birdies on the 6th and 9th holes. Choi said that she felt very good about her win. Her mother, Chan Choi, added that she was very proud of her daughter’s accomplishment.
Bayside High School golf co-coach Andrew Cogliati said that when he and assistant coach Maggie Kassimis first saw Choi play, they did not realize how good she was. &#8220When she got on the course,” Cogliati said, &#8220Maggie and I were pretty much taken by how good she is.”
Cogliati described Choi as a team player who takes the first steps to help. &#8220She's a freshman and she has unlimited potential,” Cogliati said. &#8220Her future looks very bright.”
Bayside's Harin Lee and Cardozo's Jean Chong finished second with a one-over 38. To break the tie, Lee, the Commodores' freshman, and Chong, in her senior year, played the first handicap hole on the course. Chong, in the process of applying to West Point, finished the hole at par, earning her second place honors. She has been playing golf for six years, having gotten involved through her family.
Cogliati also described Lee as a number one golfer and said that she and Choi are a &#8220one-two punch in golf,” adding &#8220It is a delight to coach both of them.”
&#8220We're always excited about the tournament and the accomplishments of you young ladies and your schools,” PSAL Golf Coordinator Danny Harris said during the awards presentation.
North Shore Towers has been hosting PSAL tournaments for the last three years. &#8220We just feel that it’s a good fit for the girls,” Harris said.
