Giuseppe Modica, from Ozone Park, had sent coffee to relatives in Sicily but with the wrong name on the package, the large box was returned to him – through the Ozone Park Post Office, and on Tuesday, October 10, Modica stopped by the new Project Sunshine window at the post office to pick up his returned grounds.
Based on an idea to speed up service for elderly customers, the Project Sunshine window will now be open every weekday from noon to 2 p.m. in the slot closest to the front door. The window will offer money orders, stamps, and customer service answers to senior citizens.
Postal employee Pat Trigo will staff the window everyday except Monday.
“I find it very helpful for the elderly people who cannot stand on line for long periods of time,” Trigo said during her first Sunshine shift on Tuesday. “It’s very convenient for them.”
For Fe Sales, a local resident who stopped by the Ozone Park Post Office on Tuesday and described herself as over 60, the addition is a welcome one.
“But they already have a nice service over here,” Sales said, complimenting the facility, located at 91-11 Liberty Avenue, and the post office employees. Recently, the building also received a new paint job and community bulletin board.
Modica said that an extra window – devoted to senior citizens who could cut their waiting time in line – was definitely a good thing.
“Sometimes, it’s very busy in here,” Modica said, before hauling his returned package out the door.
If only he had known beforehand that he could have cut his wait in the long, afternoon line.
