The Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Care (VNSNY), a service dedicated to supporting terminally ill patients and their families, is looking for volunteers who would be willing to provide hospice care.
Hospice is a branch of treatment that deals with providing comfort to a patient, in such simple ways as going on a walk with them, listening to music together, or sitting down and having a conversation with them. Such everyday activities like these can go a long way to providing end of life care to a terminally ill patient.
Volunteers may also choose to help bereaved family members through emotional support, in a myriad of ways.
Taren Sterry, a former volunteer, described the entire volunteer process as “transcending.” She hopes that more volunteers will come to VNSNY, which in turn will make the homecare service a lot more fulfilling to the patients and their families.
The service is impeccably run, and the volunteers are given a 12-hour training course to prepare them for administering hospice care. As the VNSNY slogan states, “Hospice – It’s about the way you live.”
