Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer has hand picked a Queens native to become the next executive director of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
Elliot “Lee” Sander, 50, who grew up in Jamaica, and currently lives in Douglaston, will officially fill the role next month when he replaces resigning incumbent Katherine Lapp.
“I am honored that these talented individuals have chosen to join me in government service,” said Spitzer as he announced Sander's appointment and many others. “They will bring their diverse professional backgrounds and experience to the challenges facing the state. I am confident that they will ably and honorably represent the people of New York.”
Sander, who attended Jamaica High School and graduated from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, currently serves as corporate senior vice president at DMJH Harris, a leading transportation-engineering firm.
He also serves as director for the Rudin Center for Transportation Policy and Management at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University.
Sander is also the founder and co-chairman of the Empire State Transportation Alliance, and he is a commissioner of the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission.
Sander currently resides in Douglaston with his wife and two children, a 13-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son.
