After months of trying to restore bus stops along three lines in Flushing, Assemblymember Jimmy Meng recently announced that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) outlined two options for Community Board 7 to review.
Meng's office got involved many months ago when residents of the Latimer Gardens complex, located at the intersection of Linden Place and Latimer Place complained about the removal of Q25, Q34 and QBX 1 bus stops, without warning, from a location they had been in for more than 20 years in front of the Coram Caf Billiards.
However, the community became upset that relocated spots were in an area that was unsafe, so the MTA said they would consider removing the two stops at 32nd Avenue and reinstitute the Latimer stops, or relocate the existing stops on Linden Place at Northern Boulevard to Linden Place and 35th Avenue.
“I am pleased that after almost one year of correspondence and disregard from the MTA Bus Company, that the MTA has finally demonstrated willingness to hear the concerns of our community,” Meng said. “Sudden removal of bus stops in Flushing or anywhere should not be done without a dialogue with the surrounding residents.”
Although Meng said he is happy that the MTA has considered reinstituting the bus stops, he said it would not be his decision about what option the community will recommend. Meng said that when Community Board 7 convenes at their meeting they would discuss the matter and decide on which proposal is the best for the community.
