Six international ambassadors will be on hand for an “invitation-only” reception at Kupferberg Holocaust Center for a new exhibit to honor WWII diplomats who helped victims of the Holocaust entitled Diplomats of Mercy.
During the event, on Tuesday, February 27, organizers hope to acknowledge and honor the individual diplomats and pay tribute to their predecessors.
U.N. ambassadors, specifically, Bei Wei Liu of China; Frank Majoor of the Netherlands; Peter Mauer of Switzerland; Cesar Martinez of El Salvador; Mehmet Samsar of Turkey and Anders Linden of Sweden will attend to represent six heroic diplomats from their respective countries.
“As the Holocaust spread across Europe, its barbarity traumatized thousands of people. Yet, there emerged in many countries, diplomats who at great risk to their careers, their families and even their lives and in opposition to their own government’s policies, mobilized their meager resources to save the lives of thousands of Jews slated to be murdered,” said Dr. Arthur Flug, executive director of the Kupferberg Center.
Flug went on to explain that the stories will be told through narratives, photographs, and articles on display. “This was not done out of financial gain or desire for public recognition, but out of a powerful belief in the dignity of the individual.”
The Diplomats of Mercy exhibit will be open free to the public beginning Thursday, March 1 during the Center’s hours of operation - Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Kupferberg Center is located on the Queensborough Community College campus, at 222-05 56th Avenue.
