For some business owners in downtown Flushing, Monday morning, February 12, was a soggy disaster because a water main broke at 34th Avenue and 127th Place.
By the next day, water service in the affected area had been restored and the clean up by the Department of Environmental Protection had begun.
The break occurred in an 8-inch long section of the main, causing flooding of the street and many businesses in the area causing them to close for the day.
Businesses from Northern Boulevard to Willets Point Boulevard spent much of Monday without any water at all. The exact cause of the water main break at this time is unknown, according to a spokesperson from the DEP.
The problematic section of the pipe has been removed and replaced, and taken in to the DEP headquarters to be tested by their engineers. The pipe will undergo extensive testing and a report detailing the cause of the break will be released to the public in about a month.
