New precinct satellite set up

Criminals beware.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) announced that effective Thursday, July 26, Queens Village’s 105th Precint – which covers an area of 12.67 square miles - will have a satellite substation.
Manned by 40 uniformed officers of the 105th - and located in the former task force headquarters adjacent to the Rosedale Long Island Rail Road - the purpose of the substation is &#8220to reduce response time in that part of the community - and the precinct overall,” said Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Paul J. Brown.
The 105th Precinct's current response time is eight minutes; the city-wide average is seven.
&#8220The officers will be moved to be closer to the action,” Brown continued. &#8220This also provides the opportunity for people to walk in and deal with a desk sergeant 24 hours a day.”
According to Brown, this project is modeled after a similar one in Staten Island.
&#8220A substation was set up in the 122nd Precinct,” he said.&#8220And there was a significant improvement (50 percent) in response time one year later.”
Councilmember James Sanders - who was overjoyed at the announcement - told The Courier Sun that the 105th station house is located at the north side of the territory, and that there have been calls for an additional structure on the south side.
&#8220It's been a mantra in our community that we need a precinct,” said Sanders. Community Board 13 members echoed the sentiment.
&#8220We have been pushing for 30 years for a complete precinct at the south side of the district,” said Richard Hellenbrecht, Chair. &#8220This [substation] is a help, but not sufficient in the long run. We will continue to push for another precinct by 2009, if not before.”
Sanders said that he has been in communication with Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly about expanding the current structure and has even offered to procure funding.
&#8220I believe the [satellite] will be a permanent footprint of the 105th Precinct,” he said.
