Year: Sophomore
Sport: Basketball
The sharp-shooting sophomore didn’t play much in Archbishop Molloy’s epic 58-50 overtime upset of Christ the King last Saturday, but she made the most of her time. Gurriero scored 11 of her team-high 18 points in overtime, which included back-to-back 3-pointers from the top of key. She added six points in second half to get the Stanners into the extra period.
Gurriero, in foul trouble for most of the afternoon, was a non-factor until interim coach Dom Cecala called her number. Her coach on jayvee a season ago, Cecala put her in, he said, because of a steely-eyed look she shot at him.
“I remember from last year — she gets this look, she’s going to go in and take over,” he said.
Senior Kerri White had a good feeling once Gurriero swished her first few shots of the second half. “When she hits one or two in a row, she’s on fire. You know everything else is going in,” she said.
“I was just really mad,” Gurriero said of sitting on the bench after picking up three fouls in the second quarter. “I just went for it.”
She also scored 13 points for the Stanners in a 73-68 loss to St. John Villa (Staten Island) on Monday.
