Lewis, Lane shock higher seeds, move into ‘A’ second round

Queens was the home of upsets Thursday afternoon in the PSAL Class A boys’ basketball bracket. Two low seeds from the borough, No. 28 Francis Lewis and No. 25 Franklin K. Lane, defeated much more heralded teams in the first round of the playoffs.

Lewis, playing in its first postseason since 2002 under the leadership of coach Perry Dortch, No. 5 Murry Bergtraum, 59-56, in the school's leaky Manhattan gym.

Lane, coached by Pete Banta, knocked off No. 8 Tilden, 53-50, in Brooklyn. Argelix Gil, who is also the Knights' football team's starting quarterback, led all scorers in that game with 28 points.

Francis Lewis will travel to No. 5 Teacher's Prep on Wednesday for a second-round game. Lane will head to No. 8 Westinghouse on Tuesday. Both tip-offs are set for 5 p.m.

In other PSAL Class A first-round games Thursday, No. 3 East New York Transit Tech beat No. 30 Jamaica, 68-37, No. 6 South Bronx eliminated No. 27 John Adams, 70-61, and No. 4 Gompers defeated No. 29 Grover Cleveland, 82-54.
