Councilmember Leroy Comrie (standing) served as a keynote speaker for the 113th Precinct’s Stop the Violence Gang Seminar, which was held at August Martin High School recently. In effort to educate local youth about the dangers of being involved with gangs, the NYPD School Safety Community Outreach Unit and the New York City Department of Corrections made presentations, along with local community activists and educators. The event was sponsored by Hot 97 radio station.
“I want to applaud the Deputy Inspector Kristel Johnson and the members of the 113th Precinct for hosting this forum,” said Comrie. “This is an excellent example of effective community policing. By working in partnership with local stakeholders, the NYPD can both educate our young people about the growing threat of gangs and break down the barriers that sometimes exist between police and our community. Given the recent gang shooting that took place outside another Queens’ high school and the rise of gang activity in our community, this forum is part of a much-needed public awareness movement to eradicate the culture of gangs in our neighborhoods.”
