American Studies beat Richard Green HS of Teaching in the PSAL Class B girls' basketball championship Saturday afternoon and will play either the Fieldston School or Briarcliff in the state Federation Class B finals Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at Glens Falls Civic Center.”Never heard of it,” said junior Crystal James of the upstate New York outpost. “I guess I'll find out about it next Saturday.”Before this weekend, American Studies' longest road trip this season was to Lehman College in the Bronx to play in the city semifinals against Springfield Gardens. But, after all, this is a season of firsts for the Eagles. They are the only team to bring a city championship trophy back to the Long Island City high school. Now they can possibly bring a state title back, as well.”I never imagined coaching into a state championship in my life,” third-year coach Juan Faya said. That's where he'll be this weekend, though. Faya said after the PSAL championship victory that he had not even thought about booking a room any kind of transportation for his team's 3 1/2-hour trip. Despite the Eagles (31-0) being undefeated and top seed in the playoffs, he didn't want to think that far ahead.”I might never have another season like this,” he said.Reach Associate Sports Editor Marc Raimondi by e-mail at mraimond@timesledger.com or call 718-229-0300, Ext. 130.
