After losing the Bronx A East Division to Gompers, South Bronx had been hoping for revenge and seemed on the right path, advancing into the quarterfinals of the PSAL Championship.
Gompers held up their end of the bargain with an amazing come-from-behind victory in its quarterfinal battle, looking like a lock for the finals after George Westinghouse upset Eagle Academy in the following game.
But South Bronx, who would have moved one-step closer to a rematch in the PSAL finals, was clearly overmatched in its game on Sunday, March 9, at Lehman College, losing to East New York Transit Tech, 67-58.
While the South Bronx school, led by Andre Martin and Dashawn Joyner, jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, Transit Tech immediately answered back, tying the score and pulling ahead 19-10 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Brooklyn school would never look back with sophomore sensation Barry Posey and senior Naquan Hayes ruling the court, moving ahead by 13 going into the final eight minutes of play.
South Bronx has been known for wild comebacks, but the last quarter was no different than the previous three, with the exception being more fouls. South Bronx coach Doug Porter seemed to yell for the calls and seemed pleased when they were made, if only to stop the clock for a few seconds. But South Bronx would not take advantage, scoring only 17 of 41 free throw shots, a fact Porter believes helped contribute to the eventual loss.
