First-class stamps cost a penny more

On Monday, May 12, the United States Postal Service (USPS) implemented a few pricing changes. According to the USPS the most visible adjustment is the extra penny it will cost to mail First-Class one-ounce letters. Any mail sent without the additional cent of postage will be returned to sender - this includes time-sensitive correspondence like bills.

Not all changes mean higher rates for cash-strapped consumers, however. Some other changes:

  • Express mailing will switch to a zone-based pricing system, which means lower rates for nearby destinations.
  • Postage for Express Mail purchased online or through corporate accounts will be three percent cheaper.
  • Customers will save three and a half percent on Priority Mail sent with electronic postage.
