Get ready for food, family and fun as the Richmond Hill Block Association (RHBA) hosts its 35th annual Park Fair on Saturday, September 6 (rain or shine).
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Forest Park (at the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and Park Lane South) will be jumping - with everything from vendors to rock bands to martial arts demonstrations.
Geared toward families, the Park Fair has “grown both in [the number of] people that go and the things [we] have,” said Wendy Bowne, Vice President of the RHBA and Chair of the event.
With thousands in attendance last year, the 2008 funfest promises to be even bigger — and better.
There will be a music recital by Piano Art; performances by classic rock bands Plastic Soul, Baby Daddy and Nightwing; a “portable museum” from the Museum of Natural History; a “portable smoke house” from the Fire Department Education Unit; walking tours with the Forest Park Urban Rangers; and video games, basketball and more with representatives of the U.S. Army, among others.
Raffle prizes this year include gift certificates to the Atlantic Diner, La Cantina Pizzeria and O Lavrador Restaurant, as well as Sam Ash Music Stores; tickets to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, National Baseball Hall of Fame and Atlas Park Regal Cinemas; Z100 “goodies”; and even a lithograph autographed poster from the 2007 Super Bowl champions, the New York Giants.
The highlight of the day will be the RHBA’s Community Awards, presented at 12:30 p.m. to the “people who go above and beyond the call of duty in Richmond Hill,” according to Bowne.
Among this year’s honorees is Joshua Schneps, Co-Publisher of The Queens Courier.
“I’m honored to be recognized by the Richmond Hill Block Association,” said Schneps. “Simcha Weisman [President] has done an amazing job leading an outstanding team. We’re happy to partner with their organization and support the Richmond Hill community.”
Nancy Cataldi, President of the Richmond Hill Historical Society, is also an awardee.
“It’s a great group and a great honor,” she said. “They do a lot for the community.”
“This is the best event in Richmond Hill,” Cataldi continued. “It’s huge — it brings people from all different neighborhoods.”
