The city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) will be hosting a live Q&A on Friday, November 14, which is globally recognized as World Diabetes Day.
The DOHMH will host the Q&A online through its web forum, www.nycHealthy.gov.
The online forum will be conducted by Dr. Diana Berger, the DOHMH’s diabetes medical specialist from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., where she will be discussing ways to prevent and manage diabetes.
Diabetes, along with obesity, are epidemics that are on the rise at both the national and local level.
Approximately 500,000 New Yorkers have been diagnosed with diabetes, and another 200,000 suffer from it but do not know it, hence they are not getting the proper treatment either.
More than 100,000 people with poorly controlled diabetes are at high risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and even amputation.
On November 14, you can go the DOH’s web site (www.nyc.gov/health) and click on “nycHealthy” to post any questions you may have about this topic and to learn more about diabetes.
