Astoria Assemblyman Michael Gianaris has come up with a proposal that could save the state as much as $30 million a year that is at least worthy of consideration. He has proposed a four−day work week for state employees involved in non−essential services.
Instead of working 9−to−5 five days a week, employees would work 8−to−6 four days a week. The idea is that energy, building maintenance and transportation costs would be greatly reduced under this proposal. Agencies involved in public safety and healthcare would not be included.
New Jersey is considering a similar proposal. This idea might even work in the public schools. Both city and state must look for ways to cut costs that do not involve reducing services. This is a good start.
