Flushing BID says ‘Can do’

One of the main functions of a Business Improvement District (BID) is to beautify the neighborhood for everyone’s benefit, and the Flushing Transportation Hub BID is no exception.

On Tuesday, April 28, Flushing BID members, joined by Sanitation officials and City Councilmember John Liu, unveiled the first in a series of brand-new, tamper-resistant litter baskets for the downtown Flushing area.

“I’m delighted to celebrate another great step forward in the battle against litter on such a vibrant commercial strip in downtown Flushing, Queens. I thank Councilmember John Liu and the Flushing BID for funding these baskets,” said New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Commissioner John J. Doherty.

The new baskets feature a partial cover that prevents litter from blowing away on windy days or spilling out of a nearly-full basket, and discourages would-be bottle recyclers from scattering trash in their nickel-deposit quest.

After giving special thanks to Liu and DSNY Assistant Commissioner Maria Termini for years of cooperation, Flushing BID Executive Director Mabel Law said, “We look forward to the next four years of this five year trash can replacement program and our continued partnership with DSNY.”

“The BID’s public trash can initiative is another step in our main goal to keep Flushing clean and attractive for everyone,” said Jim Gerson, BID Chair. “We want to thank Councilmember Liu for his continuous commitment in bringing in additional streetscape improvements to Flushing and to DSNY for allowing us to continue this important step in the long-term beautification of the downtown area.” he said.

City Councilmember John Liu also praised the BID and Department of Sanitation for their efforts.

“New Yorkers deserve streets and communities that are safe and clean,” Liu said.
