MTA to tap interim CEO Helena Williams

The much-maligned Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will have a new Executive Director and CEO – at least for the time being.

The MTA board is likely to approve current Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) President Helena Williams to the new position on Wednesday, May 27 where she will replace Elliot Sander, who held the job from January 1, 2007 through May 7, 2009. Sander resigned days after Albany legislators agreed on a bailout package sparing riders doomsday fare hikes and service cuts.

“This is a time of transition at the MTA, but it is critical that we continue to serve our customers without missing a beat,” said H. Dale Hemmerdinger, Chairman of the MTA board. “Helena Williams is doing a terrific job at the Long Island Rail Road and will be an excellent steward for the entire transit system until a new Chairman and CEO is appointed.”

If the MTA board approves Williams on Wednesday, she will take over the Executive Director and CEO responsibilities until Governor David Paterson and the Albany legislators tap a new person to lead the agency. In addition, Williams will remain President of the LIRR and continue her responsibilities with that agency.

While the CEO and Executive Director position will be new for Williams, she is no stranger to the agency or the local area. Williams has served as President of Long Island Bus and the LIRR during a combined 15 years at the MTA. She also served as deputy county executive to Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi.

“I am honored to be asked to step in temporarily – pending approval of the MTA Board – to serve in this position while continuing my duties as President of the LIRR,” Williams said. “As we all know, the subway, bus, bridge, tunnel and commuter rail systems are the lifeblood of our city and of the entire New York metropolitan region. I’ve spent much of my career at the MTA, so this will be an exciting challenge.”
