If you find yourself constantly barking “What?” – or you’re getting frustrated because it seems like everyone’s muttering, you may be suffering from hearing loss.
A helpful voice is available at the Hearing Loss Association of Queens.
Their next meeting, free and open to all, will be held on Monday, May 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lexington Center for the Deaf, at 75th Street and 30th avenue in Jackson Heights.
The Queens association at Lexington is the local chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) and is sponsored by the Lexington Hearing and Speech Center of Jackson Heights.
Their mission is “to open the world of communication to people with hearing loss through information, education, support and advocacy.”
Dr. Sharon Judlowitz, an audiologist connected with the Long Island Audiology Center who has offices in Rockville Centre and Great Neck, will speak on the subject, “Knowing When it is Time to Retire Your Hearing Aid(s) and What to Look for When Purchasing New Ones.”
Light refreshments will be served. Free local transportation will be provided by the Lexington van, which will leave from in front of the Astoria Federal Bank at 73rd Street and Broadway promptly at 5:45 p.m. and return at the end of the meeting.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 36 million (17 percent of) American adults have some degree of hearing loss, making it a public health issue third in line after heart disease and arthritis.
HLAA the nation’s leading organization representing people with hearing loss, has an office in the Washington D.C. area, 14 state organizations, and 200 local chapters.
