Assemblymember Audrey Pheffer was pleased to join the Association of Filipino Teachers of America for their 20th Anniversary Gala held at the Astoria World Manor.
“The Association of Filipino Teachers of America is an outstanding organization that has been in the forefront of helping to provide quality education for our New York City schools,” said Pheffer.
Beginning in the mid 1980s, when New York was facing a teacher shortage in inner-city schools, the Board of Education began recruiting teachers from the Philippines. From 2003-2008, Filipino teachers were heavily recruited to teach math and the sciences, said Pheffer.
“The Association of Filipino Teachers of America has played an invaluable role in shaping the future of our great city,” said Pheffer.
