“Creating The Time You Need”

(Always consult a physician prior to beginning any exercise program.)

Today’s message is simple. “We always make time for that which is important to us.”

Being the “Gym Guy” here at NST lends itself to many insightful, and actually comical, moments when you least expect them.

For example, when people see me on the elevator or walking in the arcade or even standing out in front of Building One waiting for a ride home, they usually offer the same confession: “Hi Steve. I really should be coming to the gym more, but I just can’t find the time.”

This is very interesting to me because I never ask people, “Why don’t you come to the gym more?” I’m just saying hello. I’m not keeping score of your gym usage.

I believe in free will. I won’t guilt anybody or prod anybody. I’ll encourage wellness, proper nutrition, and balance of lifestyle, but there’s no pushing on my part – free will…free will…free will.

I have found that when people walk into the gym with their own desire to be there, they are happier and much more productive than those husbands who have been dragged down by their wives, or parents who have been ordered by their children to exercise. Sure these other people do as they’re told, but it’s under protest, and so they become obsessed by the clock, and naturally don’t really benefit at all.

If you can look at exercise as a means to a wonderful, joyous end, then your attitude changes, and you’ll actually seek us out on your own, whether you are prompted to or not. It’s really quite simple: A better you is up to you.

Once you tap into the physical and psychological benefits of just moving your body a few times a week, you’ll never again look at exercise the same way. You’ll actually miss it when you’re unable to attend.

You have to make the decision that you are worth the effort and that everything else can wait while you take care of yourself. Once you put yourself at the top of the priority list, you’ll find time for exercise that you always had but never saw.

This is key: We are comfort seekers. We do what feels good. It’s natural to be this way.

However, our time is a wonderful tool to be molded and used anyway we desire. I know that we are used to putting every obligation and everyone else’s demands in front of our own. Your list of “things to do” is never done, and so your reasons for not taking care of yourself never ends, and so you remain sedentary, and probably unhappy.

But lately I’ve been realizing one very simple truth: tomorrow is really an unknown event. We plan, we read, we prepare, but this is the moment we live in, so why not use it to improve our lives, our bodies, our minds, our spirit – OURSELVES?

Acceptance is the key. Put your health first, which in turn benefits everyone around you, and you’ll be astonished and surprised, because we always make time for that which is important to us.

Ciao.
