One southeast Queens Congressmember helped make the holidays a little brighter for kids in his district.
Representative Gregory Meeks delivered toys to children at the NAACP Day Care Center in St. Albans and the Community Church of the Nazarene in Far Rockaway on Friday, December 18 – just in time for Christmas.
“I believe we delivered toys to about 100 children,” said Candace Sandy, a spokesperson for Meeks. “What was great was that the children were asked to write what they would like Santa to bring them, and they were given the actual items they asked for.”
Meeks, who organizes the event annually, started the day by making the delivery in St. Albans, where the younger set of children, some as young as three-years-old, received their toys. When they made their second stop in Rockaway, the children were extremely excited to see the presents.
“Those Rockaway kids didn’t wait, they tore those gifts open,” Sandy said. “One kid ripped open his gift, which was a video game he had wanted, and screamed ‘I love Santa!’”
This year, more people in southeast Queens were in need of assistance because of the foreclosure crisis and poor economic conditions affecting the area.
“As needs in the community become greater, the congressman expands his holiday events,” said Sandy. “The Congressman has made an effort to provide financial relief to these families by providing toys or other things.”
