NYHQ to give soccer players medical support

The oldest soccer field in continuous use in the United States will now have the best medical treatment available to those kicking around on its hallowed ground.
The Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at New York Hospital Queens (NYHQ) announced a new sports medicine program directly connected to the Metropolitan Oval Foundation, administrator of the Met Oval soccer field in Maspeth.
The field is home to the Brooklyn Knights, the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and numerous soccer programs for all ages and skill levels.
James J. Vogt, president and founder of The Met Oval Foundation, Inc., said that there were numerous reasons for partnering with the hospital, but two reasons stood out above all others.
“The hospital has an excellent reputation for quality care,” said Vogt. “Also, the proximity to our facility makes their services accessible to those soccer players and Met Oval staff who may choose to go there.”
The new relationship will enable the hospital’s medical specialists to provide Met Oval participants with information about sports injury prevention and treatment options. The orthopedic and rehabilitation medicine specialists will provide care and treatment in the main hospital facility in Flushing or in an outpatient center located in Fresh Meadows.
Jeffrey Rosen, M.D., Chairman of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at NYHQ, has a stake in the new program that is not squarely business-oriented. As an avid soccer player with children who also play the sport, he understands the concerns regarding injury prevention and recovery.
“People who engage in sports can be assured that when they need access to orthopedic care or rehabilitative support, we have specially trained sports medicine doctors that can offer a higher level of care right here in Queens,” said Rosen. “And, with us, athletes of all ages and ability can find the newest treatment options not offered elsewhere in the area.”
The Met Oval dates back to 1925 and stood alongside such legendary fields as the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field. The Metropolitan Oval Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to youth soccer in New York City.
