Break ground on pediatric pavilion

The North Shore-LIJ Health System recently began construction on its Cohen Children’s Medical Center’s (CCMC) $120 million pediatric pavilion.

CCMC was renamed in honor of Steven and Alexandra Cohen in March of this year. Their Cohen Foundation made a $50 million gift that is providing some of the funding for the new pavilion.

“The need for specialized pediatric services has grown tremendously,” said Dr. Arthur Klein, CCMC’s executive director and chief of staff, who is also North Shore-LIJ’s senior vice president of children’s services. “This new pavilion, made possible by the Cohens’ extraordinary generosity, will enable us to continue to be a truly world-class children’s hospital unmatched in the New York area.”

The 100,000-square-foot, six-story pavilion will include a pediatric emergency center, pediatric medical and surgical unit, a pediatric intensive care unit with 25 beds and a pediatric surgery center.

“The Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York encourages the support and involvement of our patients’ families,” Klein said. “That’s why in every step of the planning process we’ve designed spaces with them in mind.”

Completion of the pavilion construction is expected for 2012.

“Thanks to Steven and Alexandra Cohen, we’re now writing another exciting chapter in the history of this hospital,” said health system chair Saul Katz. “And as good as this hospital already is, we feel a great sense of pride in knowing the future holds even greater things for our children and our children’s children.”
