HONORS & AWARDS
Congratulations to Bayside resident Ryan Magee (St. Francis Prep 2010) on receiving a full academic scholarship to The Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York.
New York Hospital Queens has elected a new member to the Board of Trustees, Joseph R. Ficalora, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of New York Community Bancorp. Under Ficalora’s leadership, New York Community Bancorp has evolved from a mutual savings bank with seven branches in Queens and Nassau Counties to a publicly traded multi-bank holding company with 282 branch offices serving consumers and businesses throughout Metro New York, New Jersey, Florida, Ohio, and Arizona. New York Community Bancorp is the fourth largest thrift in the United States and the largest in New York State.
He was born and bred in Corona Queens; the financial institution he runs has its roots in Queens and he is an active board member for some of the borough’s most successful arts and cultural organizations. He gives back to this community in many ways.
The Pharmacy Safety Systems in New York State Hospitals Survey selected 40 facilities for site visits, and 24 of those hospitals were cited for implementing well-executed, innovative procedures that demonstrated improved safety and reliability in the handling and administering of medications.
Mercy Medical Center was one of only three hospitals on Long Island to be recognized for utilizing any of the best practices. Mercy was noted for its use of weekly patient safety walking rounds, procedures to assure safe administration of anticoagulation drugs, and the active involvement of its Board of Trustees in reviewing medication safety efforts.
The findings show Mercy to be at the forefront of efforts to improve the culture of safety in New York State’s hospitals and speed the adoption of pharmaceutical safety procedures.
Allstate agency owner Neil Koenig was recently named an Agent Hero by Allstate Insurance Company’s New York Region, and awarded a $500 grant for a local youth program. Koenig donated the grant to the Glendale Kiwanis Foundation, to be used to support the foundation’s youth activities, including Glendale Community Day, tutoring programs, college scholarships and summer camp for underprivileged children.

Michael Curley, owner of the Allstate agency located at 215-27 Jamaica Avenue in Queens Village, has been recognized by Allstate Insurance Company for high standards in customer satisfaction, customer retention and profitability. Curley is now among the top Allstate agencies in the nation in auto, property, commercial insurance and financial service sales.

Marion Smith, a resident of Queens Village and assistant treasurer of Melrose Credit Union, was named a 2010 Outstanding Professional by the Credit Union Association of New York at their 2010 Annual Meeting and Convention held recently in Cooperstown, NY.
Outstanding Professional honors are awarded to individuals whose life’s passion is credit unions, as demonstrated by hard work, dedication and success. Smith won the award in the asset category of $250 million or more.
APPOINTMENTS
Mount Sinai Queens has named Shelly Felder its new Senior Director, Marketing & Communications. She will be responsible for promoting the hospital’s culture of excellence in medicine and patient care throughout its service area in western Queens and beyond. She will lead her department’s programs in workplace wellness and community outreach, which provide education and support to the general public. In addition, she is responsible for initiating key partnerships with the business community and will provide strategic direction for the hospital’s advertising and public relations.
Farrell Fritz, P.C. partner Lyle C. Mahler has been appointed to the Long Island chapter of the Turnaround Management Association’s board of directors. Mahler, a Syosset resident, received his Juris Doctor degree from Fordham University School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
David Seelenfreund, 45, of Lawrence, New York, has been appointed a Vice President of Business Development for Hartsko Financial Services, LLC, based in Bayside. Hartsko is an eight-year-old purchase order financing/letters of credit firm founded by Richard Eitelberg, CPA, which will handle about $180 million in sales volume for 2010.
Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Ed Chewens to the position of Assistant Vice President, Women’s and Children’s Services. An integral part of the hospital’s leadership team for six years, Chewens most recently served as the Administrative Director of the Children’s Medical Center at Winthrop where he was responsible for the administration, program development and financial oversight of the center. His vast accomplishments in this role included combining several remote pediatric practice sites into one comprehensive multi-specialty pediatric practice at Winthrop.
OPENINGS
The cardiac team at LIJ Medical Center celebrates the grand opening of their newest cardiac catheterization laboratory. The new lab features a compact ceiling-mounted system which allows flexible positioning around the patient and enables physicians to see four dimensional images of the heart during a cardiac catheterization, the procedure to locate and open blockages in the heart.
