Q Thai Bistro in Forest Hills isn’t afraid to twist your expectations of Thai cuisine. Named after quirky inventor Q from the James Bond films, this eatery serves food that is as innovative as it is delicious.
Since the spring of 1996, owners Vesna Denic-Gmerek and Jean Gmerek have presided over this premier neighborhood destination with attention to detail and top-of-the-line service. Word of mouth started the business and quality has sustained it.
“The food is consistently good, but also very unique,” said Denic-Gmerek, whose restaurant also features a top notch wine bar, making them a great spot for night life. “We try to be innovative and I think that’s what keeps bringing people here.”
Stepping into the dimly lit, cozy restaurant, you immediately feel like you’re in a trendy Manhattan bistro – and when the 8-foot French doors are flung open, that feeling is enhanced.
There are so many enticing appetizers on Q’s menu, that it’s best to order a few dishes and sample each one. Don’t miss the Steamed Dumplings filled with minced shrimp and chicken. They are topped with roasted garlic crispies, which provide the perfect foil to the smooth texture of the dumpling. The minced shrimp and chicken filling is delicate, yet pronounced, with the shrimp flavor hitting you right at the end.
Q also offers a sushi of the day with their appetizers – this is an absolute must order. Q’s sushi preparation rivals that of most sushi-exclusive restaurants, with delicious tuna belly handled with care and paired with avocado. And the seared tuna is a palate pleaser, hitting you first with a char flavor that is almost instantly washed away with the clean taste of the raw tuna.
For your entrée, don’t be afraid to go big. Order the Crispy Whole Red Snapper with Hot & Spicy Garlic Sauce. Served head to tail, the skin is reminiscent of pork cracklings as it crunches, releasing succulent flavor before giving way to the white, flaky fish inside. This dish is available in six different levels of heat, and is also available in a red coconut curry sauce.
It wouldn’t be Thai without an array of noodle dishes, and Q offers the very best. The Drunken Noodles are loaded, three sheets to the wind. These broad noodles are stir fried with eggs, garlic, Thai basil, chilies and bell peppers with your choice of chicken or beef.
Q Thai Bistro offers some of the best cuisine, not only in Forest Hills, but in Queens at large. Go there with friends or with a date. And Q is perfect for a first date – you will be too busy either talking about the food or chewing to recognize any awkward pauses.
