Queens County Clerk Gloria D’Amico passed away on Tuesday, December 21 after a battle with cancer.
Beginning as a Democratic District Leader in 1970, D’Amico also worked for the Board of Elections, becoming Chief Clerk of the Queens Board of Elections in 1972.
In 1991, she became Queens County Clerk, a position she held until her death.
“She made the office a place to come every day,” said long-time staffer Marie Gentile. “It was filled with fun. She had a sense of humor you can’t imagine. She was more than just a boss; she was a friend to all.”
From the start, she made it a priority to improve service and access for attorneys and the public.
During her tenure, the recording system for all documents filed in the Supreme Court of Queens County advanced from microfiche to digital scanning. To expedite access to records and information, D’Amico created search departments to assist the public with inquiries.
In her capacity as Commissioner of Jurors, Queens became the first county in the city to institute the juror call-in program, whereby jurors call in to find out whether they need to serve and when and where to serve.
