Queens songwriter vying for $100G

When the new Bravo reality competition “Platinum Hit” premieres on Monday, May 30, Astoria resident Blessing Offor will be one of the songwriters competing.

The show gives viewers an inside look at the 12 musicians’ creative process as they “battle through a series of innovative songwriting challenges, testing their creativity, patience and drive,” according to the show’s site. The winner will receive a $100,000 cash prize, in addition to a publishing and recording deal.

Offor, who sings and plays the piano, said that it was “serendipitous” that he even auditioned for the show. He hadn’t initially planned on auditioning, but the night before a friend talked him out of his plans and into trying out.

When Offor found out he had been selected, he said he was at first a little hesitant since he’s “not a reality show person per se.”

“But the entertainment industry is my future,” Offor said, adding that he decided to go into the experience as optimistic as possible.

Offor, who is originally from Connecticut, has been writing songs since he was 13. His musical inspirations come from Motown, jazz and pop. Offor’s writing style is described as pop, R&B and soul.

Although Offor said his songwriting was “pretty good” when he started the competition, he said he heard a lot of advice from the judges. The head judge of “Platinum Hit” is Kara DioGuardi and the host is Jewel.

Offor said that he realized people like Jewel had once been in the position the up-and-coming musicians are currently in but that they never quit. He said that it showed him when you have an opportunity to quit, you shouldn’t do it.

As viewers watch the show, Offor said he hopes it will interest them enough to begin following him online and check out his music.

“I hope more than anything that viewers take away from it a good sense of who I am,” Offor said. “It was a great platform and they’ll have to stay tuned to see how it all ends.”

“Platinum Hit” will premiere on Bravo at 10 p.m. on Monday, May 30. For more information on the show, visit www.bravotv.com/platinum-hit.
