The Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved a traffic signal to alleviate the dangerous conditions at the intersection of 266th Street and Hillside Avenue, according to State Senator Tony Avella recently.
In early May, Avella received a request for a traffic light at this intersection by the Ahmed family, who had been having trouble navigating around the intersection. Avella contacted the DOT who initiated a traffic study in July. After the study was completed, the DOT determined that a traffic light was necessary at this particular intersection.
“I am pleased that the DOT has determined that this heavily trafficked intersection merits the installation of additional controls,” said Avella. “The Ahmed family had complained that the motorists speeding along Hillside Avenue lead to accidents on a nearly weekly basis. Thankfully, we were able to work together in order to obtain the corrective action needed to ensure safety at this intersection.”
The installation of the traffic light at the intersection of 266th Street and Hillside Avenue is estimated by the DOT to be completed by the end of November.
“This light will certainly be a good thing for the neighborhood,” said Faroque Ahmed. “There are many young children on this block and having a stoplight here will work wonders for slowing down the traffic and eliminating any future potential accidents.”
