Pack the Backpack Party at Queens Center
Queens Center will hold its First Annual Pack the Backpack Party on Wednesday, August 24 at noon.
Starting the school year off right helps minimize academic stress, lessen anxieties and empowers youth with a strong sense of self-worth. Knowing this, Queens Center is doing its part by helping economically disadvantaged school aged children get prepared for the upcoming school year by providing essential Back to School supplies.
The event’s goal is to pack 500 backpacks with school supplies for local children in need.
There will be music, giveaways – including tickets to sporting events and Broadway shows – and special guest Shelley Wade from Z100.
The event will last until 2 p.m. and will take place on the J.C. Penney wing on Level 2.
Crackdown on drunk driving
Friday, August 19 marks the beginning of a state and nationwide initiative to crackdown on drunk driving. The effort will last through Labor Day.
In 2009, there were more than 8,800 alcohol-related crashes in New York causing more than 300 lives to be lost.
The crackdown, named “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” lasts eighteen days and will combine stepped-up enforcement with media saturation to highlight the embarrassing consequences and cost of being pulled over and potentially arrested.
