Smoking will be banned starting Sunday on Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North platforms, ticketing and boarding areas and stations.
Metro-North stations in Connecticut will not be subject to the new rules.
To get the word out, an all-star lineup of New York City athletes, performers, writers and news celebrities have lent their voices to a public education campaign about the smoking ban.
LIRR President Helena Williams said, ”We supported the legislation and appreciated the governor signing it into law.” Williams said the majority of riders “are eagerly awaiting a smoke-free environment at our outdoor areas.”
During a grace period, MTA Police will issue warnings rather than summonses.
