Companies Ready To Hire On The Spot
Rep. Bob Turner is helping to spread the word about an upcoming “Veterans Hiring Event” designed for employers who have open positions to fill within their companies and specifically want to offer those opportunities to veterans.
“I have said it before and my position will never change, our veterans risk their lives to protect us every day, they deserve all of the assistance we can give them to make a smooth transition back into civilian life,” Turner said. “This is a wonderful event that seeks not only to provide veterans information about potential jobs, but for them to interview and get hired on the spot.”
The event, sponsored by the America Works of New York, Inc. and the Mayor’s Office of Veteran’s Affairs will take place today, Thursday, Jan. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Mayor’s Office for Veteran’s Affairs located at 346 Broadway, eighth floor, in Manhattan.
“As a veteran myself and a member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I am proud to have supported the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011,” Turner added. “I will continue to support events and programs that seek to help my fellow veterans not only find jobs, but find careers.”
All veterans, especially those living in a shelter, in danger of homelessness, or veterans receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are encouraged to attend.
“This event is a good opportunity for unemployed veterans to put the skills they learned as members of the armed services to work for the American economy,” the congressman noted.
Employers will be interviewing veterans to work in such fields as food service, personal training, driving, green technology, warehouse, security, banking, machine repair, and maintenance.
It was also noted that a second Veterans Job Fair will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs New York Regional Office, located at 245 West Houston St., Room 321, in Manhattan.
