KEW GARDENS HILLS — Police arrested a Kew Gardens Hills man Tuesday and charged him with stealing several silver religious items from a synagogue.
Efram Sanders, 28, was charged with burglary, grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property in connection with the theft of Torah ornaments and a silver cup from Congregation Rachel Degel Israel, according to the NYPD.
Police said three Torah crowns, two Torah mini-crowns, three Torah breastplates and two Torah pointers — all decorations for the Torah — were recovered, as well as the silver cup.
However, two silver Torah pointers, which also had been stolen from synagogue on 68th Drive near Main Street, were not found, according to the NYPD.
A request for public assistance through the media led to an investigation and the arrest, according to the NYPD. The burglary had occurred sometime between 5 p.m. Feb. 18 and 6 p.m. Feb. 25.
