Police responding to the sounds of gunshots in South Jamaica found a crashed car when they arrived, its driver dead behind the wheel with a gunshot wound in his side, the NYPD said.
Officers responded to a 911 call just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday near the corner of 118th Avenue and Ring Place. When they arrived, they discovered a white 2011 Dodge Charger that had crashed into the back of a parked SUV that was unoccupied.
Cops found a black man sitting behind the driver’s seat, and EMS took the victim to Jamaica Hospital where he was pronounced DOA, police said. The victim had not been identified.
A resident of 118th Avenue said he had not heard any gunshots, but the sound of the car’s engine screaming at the top of the street brought him to his front door to take a look.
“When you hear something like that, you know what’s coming,” said the homeowner, who wished to remain unidentified.
He said he watched as the Charger sped down the street heading west, smashed into his car parked outside his house, then tried to make a lefthand turn around the corner to Ring Place, eventually coming to a stop as it slammed into the back of a parked Ford Expedition.
He pointed out that the Charger had out-of-state plates and said the driver appeared to be in his mid-20’s.
