Honoring True Heroes at Memorial Day Events

Through cheers and solemn prayers, residents in the Times Newsweekly’s coverage area paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the U.S. over the years at a host of parades and vigils held on Memorial Day weekend. Along with marching bands and groups of marchers, the parades included ROTC organizations and members of the Armed Forces who took to the streets to display their American pride. Shown in the top photo are ROTC members marching along Metropolitan Avenue at the Forest Hills Memorial Day Parade on Sunday, May 27; an Army band is shown at left participating in the Maspeth Memorial Day Parade that same afternoon. The bottom photo shows members of St. Margaret’s Catholic War Veterans Post 1172 after their memorial service at the Middle Village Veterans Triangle on Monday, May 28. The ceremony included the rededication of the monument to include members of the Armed Forces who died in the ongoing war on terrorism. City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley (at left) was among those who took part in the vigil.
