Queens College and its athletics department recently played host to a Relay for Life event, which raised money for the American Cancer Society, in its Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
The event lasted from 6:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following morning. It served to celebrate cancer survivors while also remembering those who have died due to the illness.
The money raised will benefit cancer research, as well as transportation for families to visit patients, cancer treatments, wigs for patients and more.
The relay featured dodgeball and volleyball contests and themed laps to honor various cancer survivors in attendance.
A “luminaria” was held in the evening, where all the participants lit candles in loving memory of those who died.
“I know what it is like to watch a loved one fight the battle with cancer,” said sophomore women’s soccer and track and field player Bernadette Wyndham. “My mother battled breast cancer for 11 years and unfortunately lost her battle three and one-half years ago. I love to know that I can help those who are fighting cancer so one day we will not have to worry about receiving the words, ‘You have cancer.’”
