Claims Kid Was Brandishing Knife
An Ozone Park crossing guard charged last Friday, June 8, for allegedly choking a 14-year-old male student claimed in published reports that the youth was armed with a knife.
Jillian Selby, 60, who is assigned to M.S. 137 in Ozone Park, reportedly confronted the student in the vicinity of 99th Street and Rockaway Boulevard at around 7:30 a.m. last Friday.
According to the criminal complaint provided by the Queens District Attorney’s office, the 14-year-old male claimed that Selby yelled at the student, then knocked his hat off his head and stepped on his foot.
It is alleged that the the crossing guard allegedly placed her hand around the teenager’s neck and began to choke him.
The incident was later reported to the 106th Precinct, and following an investigation, Selby was taken into custody on charges of assault, crimi- nal obstruction of breathing, harassment and endangering the welfare of a child.
Court records noted that Selby was arraigned in Queens Criminal court last Friday before Judge Michael Yavinsky, who released her on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 24.
Following her arrest, Selby was quoted in published reports claiming that she confronted the youth after allegedly spotting him in possession with a small knife.
Reportedly, Selby stated that the teen then claimed that he was going to attack another student, then lunged at the crossing guard. She further claimed that the marks on her neck were from the teenager’s friends, who were involved in the scuffle.
The investigation is ongoing.
