Hearing On Creek Funds Feb. 11
Residents living near Newtown Creek will get to have their say on which projects the state should fund as part of its Environmental Benefits Projects Program on Monday, Feb. 11 at the Polish and Slavic Center at 176 Java St. in Greenpoint.
The state is collaborating with the residents of Greenpoint in investing $19.5 million into various initiatives, dubbed “Environmental Benefit Projects (EBPs),” in the community.
These EBPs will be designed to provide significant environmental improvements in Greenpoint and address environmental areas of concern for the community, such as water quality, groundwater, open space, reduction of toxic pollution and air quality.
The money was obtained in a settlement with ExxonMobil over oil contamination along the greenpoint waterfront.
In November, the state issued a list of preliminary project ideas, which included green roofs, solar panels and gardens on residential homes, community facilities and schools; various street improvements to aid in stormwater management, the creation of new community facilities such as museums and science centers, the refurbishment of area parks, and improvements to waterfront areas.
At the Feb. 11 meeting, residents will get the chance to weigh in on those proposed items.
