Though it opened its doors back in September, teenagers, teachers and faculty celebrated the opening of Maspeth High School with elected officials and Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott during a ceremony on Monday morning, Feb. 25. As noted, the campus at the corner of 57th Avenue and 74th Street currently houses freshmen and sophomore classes, with two additional classes to be added in the next two school years. Maspeth High School held its first class in Forest Hills at the Queens Metropolitan High School campus during the 2011-12 school year before the Maspeth building was completed last summer. Helping Walcott in cutting the green ceremonial ribbon before a crowd of students, teachers and parents in attendance were City Council Members Elizabeth Crowley, Leroy Comrie and Diana Reyna, Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, Panel for Educational Policy Member Dmytro Fedkowskyj and Maspeth High School Principal Khurshid Abdul-Mutakabbir.
