Hundreds turned out at the Queens Borough Hall in Kew Gardens last Wednesday, Apr. 23, to protest cuts to after-school programs. According to the Campaign for Children, the preliminary budget put forth by Mayor Michael Bloomberg would reduce funding for child care and after-school programs by $130 million, jeopardizing seats for more than 47,000 children across the five boroughs. They claimed the cutbacks, if enacted, would lead to the closure of two Beacon afterschool programs located in Queens on July 1. Pictured at the podium is Queens Borough President Helen Marshall surrounded by fellow protesters. Other elected officials participating in the event were City Council Members Leroy Comrie, Karen Koslowitz, Donovan Richards, Jimmy Van Bramer and Mark Weprin.
