Reckless Driver Runs from Accident

Gets Cuffed After Hitting Pedestrian In Elmhurst

Following a pursuit through Elmhurst streets, a Brooklyn man who allegedly struck a pedestrian while driving through a red light last Wednesday night, May 22, was cuffed by police, it was reported.

The suspect was identified by law enforcement sources as Rusty Janvier, 28, of Union Street in Crown Heights.

Reportedly, Janvier was behind the wheel of a 2008 Nissan when it ran a red light and struck a man attempting to cross through the inter- section of Queens Boulevard and 59th Avenue at around 9:54 p.m. last Wednesday.

According to information provided by the Queens District Attorney’s office, members of the 110th Precinct-who were en route to a separate traffic accident-observed the pedestrian being struck.

Law enforcement sources said the victim, who had been knocked unconscious, was rushed by paramedics to a local hospital for treatment.

The officers activated the sirens in their patrol car and pursued the Nissan for five blocks along 59th and 58th avenues in attempting to stop the driver, authorities noted. The car reportedly came to a stop behind a tow truck on 58th Avenue.

Police said Janvier was observed exiting from the driver’s seat of the stopped Nissan and entering the rear passenger seat. The officers reportedly went out and questioned him.

Janvier was taken into custody by police after he allegedly failed to produce a valid driver’s license. According to the criminal complaint, an investigation found that Janvier’s license had been suspended six times in the past before it was finally revoked on Mar. 9 of this year.

The suspect was charged by P.O. Stephen Ruotolo of the 110th Precinct on charges of reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation and leaving the scene of an accident.

Court records indicated that Janvier was arraigned on May 24 in Queens Criminal Court before Judge Donna-Marie E. Golia, who released him on $1,500 bail.

He is scheduled to return to court on June 20.
