WOODSIDE — A city correction officer said it was a case of mistaken identity that led him to shoot his son, but the teen called the incident an out-of-control example of tough love, the New York Post reported.

Prosecutors said Robert Smalls, 39, claimed he yelled, “Police, stop!” when he found someone grabbing at his waist inside his Woodside home early Sunday morning before allegedly opening fire, the Post reported.

Smalls was charged with assault and weapon possession after his son, 17-year-old Quasaun Smalls, was shot, but the father’s defense attorney said his client could not clearly see and does not have 20/20 vision, according to the paper.

Quasaun said his father allegedly opened fire after the two had anargument over the teenager’s shoplifting arrest, the Post reported.
