Bitter cold air complicated efforts by firefighters in battling a five-alarm inferno that ripped through a Greenpoint lumberyard and warehouse early last Saturday morning, Jan. 4, sources said. Reportedly, the blaze broke out at about 12:20 a.m. at the Marly Building Supply company located at the intersection of Meeker Avenue and Varick Street. Over 200 firefighters from 50 Fire Department units rushed to the scene along with EMS units and officers from the 94th Precinct. There were no reported injuries, but firefighters had difficulty pouring water on the fire due to the frigid conditions. Published reports indicated the blaze was finally brought under control about eight hours later.
