Elderly Woman Killed In Hit-&-Run Accident
An elderly Richmond Hill woman died from injuries she sustained in a hit-and-run accident on a neighborhood street early last Thursday morning, Feb. 20, police reported.
Law enforcement sources identified her as 73-year-old Kaneez Hussein of 129th Street.
Police later located the driver allegedly involved in the accident- Bladimer Alvarez Sorto, 27, also of 129th Street in Richmond Hill-and took him into custody on felony charges.
Coincidentally, the victim and suspect lived a block away from each other, it was reported.
Authorities said the accident occurred at about 6:32 a.m. last Thursday at the corner of Jamaica Avenue and 131st Street.
Based on information obtained during its investigation, police determined Hussein was walking in the middle of Jamaica Avenue when she suddenly fell.
Shortly after hitting the pavement, police said, she was hit by a gray 2004 Nissan Altima allegedly driven by Alvarez Sorto. Despite hitting the victim, law enforcement sources said, the sedan sped away from the location.
Officers from the 102nd Precinct and EMS units responded to the scene. Paramedics rushed Hussein to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she died later that day.
Police located Alvarez Sorto and his vehicle hours after the accident. He was taken into custody on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and unlicensed operator.
