The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association (WRBA) paid tribute to four major contributors to the community during its annual dinner/dance last Friday night, Oct. 10, at Vetro’s By Russo on the Bay in Howard Beach. Historian Allan Smith and Margie Schmidt, owner of Schmidt’s Candy, were honored as Man and Woman of the Year, respectively. The civic group also presented its Business of the Year award to the Avenue Diner, with its owner, Paul Vasiliadis. The civic group also inducted Lewis’ of Woodhaven, a revered variety store that closed its doors in 2004, into its Hall of Fame. Among those pictured with the honorees are State Sen. Joseph Addabbo, Assemblyman Mike Miller, City Council Member Eric Ulrich and WRBA President Martin Colberg.
