No Street Cleaning Today And Friday

Alternate side parking rules will be suspended today, Thursday, Oct. 16, for the Jewish holy day of Shemini Atzereth; and Friday, Oct. 17, for the Jewish holy day of Simchas Torah. Street cleaning rules will also be suspended next Thursday, Oct. 23, for the Hindu celebration of Diwali.

Meter regulations, however, will remain in effect city wide each day.

Because of ongoing construction work at several locations throughout Queens and Brooklyn, the city DOT has announced numerous street closures in local neighborhoods for the upcoming week.

The announced diversions are current as of Wednesday, Oct. 15, and weather permitting. The DOT may shut down other roads should the need for emergency repairs arise.

Streets and highways that are affected by closures during this week include the following:

Early Closure For

Metro. Ave. Bridge

The Metropolitan Avenue Bridge over the English Kills will be closed this Saturday morning, Oct. 18, from 1 to 5 a.m. to begin staging equipment for the upcoming bridge rehabilitation project. Both pedestrian and vehicular traffic across the span will be prohibited at that time.

Westbound traffic will be directed from Metropolitan Avenue southbound along Varick Avenue, then westbound on Johnson Avenue and northbound on Morgan Avenue back to Metropolitan Avenue.

Eastbound traffic will be directed from Metropolitan Avenue southbound on Morgan Avenue, then eastbound on Johnson Avenue, northbound on Varick Avenue, eastbound on Ten Eyck Street and northbound on Stewart Avenue back to Metropolitan Avenue.

Grand Street Bridge Shut This Saturday

The Grand Street Bridge over the Newtown Creek will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. to allow for repairs to deck gratings and sidewalks.

The DOT advises drivers to use Metropolitan and Flushing avenues as alternate routes.

Resurfacing In LIC, Elmhurst, Woodside

Weather permitting, DOT crews will perform street resurfacing work on the following streets:

– 54th Avenue between Van Horn Street and Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst for paving on Friday, Oct. 17;

– 54th Street between 39th Drive and Queens Boulevard in Woodside for paving on Friday, Oct. 17;

– 55th Street between Queens Boulevard and Skillman Avenue in Woodside for paving on Friday, Oct. 17;

– 56th Avenue between Queens Boulevard and the dead end in Elmhurst for paving on Thursday, Oct. 16;

– 57th Road between 84th and 85th streets in Elmhurst for paving on Friday, Oct. 17;

– Skillman Avenue between 49th and Thomson avenues in Sunnyside and Long Island City for paving on Thursday, Oct. 16; and

– Xenia Street between Horace Harding Expressway and Martense Avenue in Corona for milling on Thursday, Oct. 16.

Drivers are reminded that parking on these streets is prohibited during work hours, under penalty of a fine and removal of vehicle.

Lane Closures On

Van Wyck Expwy.

One of three lanes in each direction of the Van Wyck Expressway between Jewel Avenue and Union Turnpike may be closed on Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. due to construction work related to the Kew Gardens rehabilitation project.

Additionally, up to two lanes in either direction of the expressway in the same section may be closed on overnights from 1 to 5 a.m.

Kew Gdns. Project Affects Union Tpke.

Long-term construction related to the state Department of Transportation’s Kew Gardens Interchange project will require the right lane of Union Turnpike eastbound to be closed at all times between 128th and 134th streets. All existing traffic lanes will remain open and are shifted to the left.

Sewer Work Leads To Pkwy. Closures

One of three lanes of the Belt Parkway between Cross Bay Boulevard and 194th Street in either direction may be closed on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and weeknights 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Additionally, two of three lanes in either direction may be closed in this segment on early weekday mornings from 1 to 5 a.m.

The closures are required to allow for sewer reconstruction, which is expected to continue through July 2016.

Furthermore, one of two lanes of the Nassau Expressway exit ramp to the eastbound Belt Parkway between 115th and 128th streets will be closed until further notice.
