Churches Collaborate For Charity
With the holidays nearing, two local churches opened an emergency food pantry in Glendale to feed the hungry through at least the end of the year.
Operated by the United Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood and Trinity Lutheran Church in Middle Village, the pantry is open on Thursday and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the former Ascension Lutheran Church, located at 78-15 78th St.
United Presbyterian Pastor Henry Fury and Trinity Lutheran Pastor Leo Longan are providing donated food to local residents in need, according to Alice Lucente, a Trinity Lutheran member involved in the effort.
Ascension Lutheran closed its doors to worshippers three years ago and is now owned by Trinity Lutheran, which is looking to sell the property. The pantry, which previously operated out of Ridgewood, relocated there last week, Pastor Fury told the Times Newsweekly on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
The pantry received a “respectable response” the first two days of operation in Glendale, Fury noted. Packages of non-perishable food items- including canned goods, pasta and cereal-were provided to needy residents.
Donations are always welcome, and those interested in supporting the pantry are invited to bring non-perishable items to Sunday services at United Presbyterian, which is now located at Covenant Lutheran Church at the corner of Catalpa Avenue and 60th Lane in Ridgewood; and Trinity Lutheran Church, located at the corner of Penelope Avenue and Dry Harbor Road.
Services at United Presbyterian begin at 11:30 a.m. and at Trinity Lutheran at 10:30 a.m.
