CUNY York College announced June 4 that its annual Foundation Merit Scholarship Benefit Dinner raised more than $250,000 for York College student scholarships,
York College said that it was a record performance for an event that featured more than 300 attendees and keynote addresses by a distinguished cast of New York philanthropists and community leaders.
The event was emceed by NY1 television anchor Errol Louis and honorees included The Mattone Group; Obie Award-winning playwright, poet, novelist and essayist Ntozake Shange; and former New York Dormitory Authority President and CEO Paul Williams.
Former New York Governor David Paterson, Tony Award-winning dancer and choreographer George Faison and CUNY trustee Phillip Berry also gave remarks.
“We are thrilled with the outstanding support we received from our many friends in the community,” said York College President Marcia Keizs. “The money raised will go to those who deserve it most—our hard-working merit scholars. Thank you to all who attended the benefit and donated to this worthy cause.”
York College Foundation Scholarships are based upon need for York’s entering and currently enrolled students. The funds go toward student’s tuition, fees, books and other school expenses.
